What’s Your Word?

Happy New Year! Many people view the beginning of a new year as a time for resolutions about things they want to start, stop or change. Because we tend to think in terms of 12-month time periods, the start of a new year seems to be the perfect time for resolutions like these. However, it’s no secret that New Year resolutions are unsuccessful. Research shows that of those who make resolutions, only 75% only make it through the first week and only 8% are successful in accomplishing their resolution.

Instead of making resolutions I know I will fail to keep, I prefer to think of the start of a new year as a time to reflect on the year just past and to create a vision of what I want for myself, my family, and my business in the coming year.

The dictionary defines vision as the act or power of imagination; a thought, concept or object formed by the imagination. For example, “She had a clear vision of what she wanted to do.” A vision can be individual as well as collective. In the case of your business, you will want to share your vision with your employees and with your candidates when you are recruiting.

Reflect on the past year, by asking yourself these questions:

• What did I learn in the past year?
• What can I let go of that failed to serve me or my business? This could be a customer, product, or even an employee.
• Where did I succeed?
• Where did I fail?

Answering these questions will show you where you have grown and where you still have some work to do.
A new year is a perfect time to create your vision. Being a small business owner can be lonely and it takes a lot of time and energy to keep the wheels in motion. That’s why having a vision is critical if you want your business to succeed. It’s also helpful to build a community of people who can support your vision.

A few years ago, I started using My One Word to create my focus and vision for the year. My word for 2017 is momentum. As an individual vision, I want my business to grow in terms of the services and products I offer as well become more profitable. Each year, I set goals that help move me towards my vision. By taking small steps daily, you can avoid being overwhelmed by everything you need to put in place to accomplish your vision. These small steps create the momentum (see how my word shows up naturally) that makes your vision a reality.

Collectively, my vision is to help small businesses create momentum by teaching them how to recruit and hire employees who are the right fit for their company’s vision.

I will be honest; this will be hard work. Hard work for me as well as for the small businesses I serve. The momentum that we build together will enable us to fulfill our goals for our business.

For me, momentum in my business means publishing a book that includes my recruiting and hiring insights and my easy to follow, step-by-process that gets results. Writing a book is hard work; it takes time, dedication, and focus that will keep the momentum going. In addition to writing, I have to think about design, editing, publishing, and marketing. Sometimes it feels overwhelming; however, my one word keeps me focused and helps me take daily steps to keep moving forward.

For you, my community of insightful business owners, momentum means sharing my expertise and knowledge with you so that you can use the insights, techniques, and resources to build momentum in your business by recruiting and hiring the right people for you. According to the US. Bureau of Statistics, employee turnover is on the rise in the United States. Last year, employee turnover rose for the fifth consecutive year, reaching 58.9 million. These numbers are alarming, especially for small business. Hiring the wrong person can financially cripple your business.

Remember, if you do nothing you can’t have momentum.
